All Aboard the West Virginia Mountain Railroads!

On October 15th, I and 45 fellow travelers set off on an adventure to Appalachia. We arrived in Charleston under a blanket of grey clouds, which could have dampened the mood. However, the dreary weather somehow mirrored our first stop at the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. Here, we learned about mental health treatments for the past hundred and fifty years as we explored the second largest stone masonry building in the world (Only the Kremlin in Moscow is larger).

For the remainder of the tour, it felt like all the clouds had vanished. We were greeted by brilliant blue skies and a riot of colors along the four scenic railways. First, we rode the historic Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, followed by the Potomac Eagle, where our group even made a cameo in the background of a Good Morning Washington newscast! Next was the New Tygart Flyer, which included a stunning stop at the High Falls of Cheat, and we capped off our adventure with the Cass Scenic Railroad, featuring its iconic coal-spewing steam engine.

However, the tour offered us more experiences than just train rides. On the final night we discussed our favorite stop and by a large margin it was our intimate tour of the lovingly restored Ridgedale Farm. Originally, built by a cousin of President George Washington in 1835, this private residence is typically closed to tourists. The owners Carol and Mike Shaw invited CTD to explore their home, workshop, and farm as they told stories of the property and former owners.

West Virginia's Mountain Railroads tour is more than just tracks and trains; it is a celebration of history, culture, and nature. Whether you’re riding a historic steam engine, exploring charming towns, or embarking on outdoor adventures, the spirit of the mountains and the legacy of the railroads await you. So, grab your camera, pack your bags, and set off on an unforgettable journey through the wild and wonderful world of West Virginia.
