Iowa Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Presents:

Experience American history firsthand as we travel from Des Moines to the iconic city of Washington, D.C. Visit renowned sites such as the US Capitol Building and the National Archives, and spend time exploring the vast exhibitions of the Smithsonian. Join your fellow members of the DAR as you celebrate America’s 250th birthday at the Continental Congress, a convention held since the organization’s founding in 1890.


DAYS 1-2—WE ARE D.C. BOUND!
Travel by motorcoach from Des Moines, Iowa, to Washington, D.C. Grow closer with your fellow DAR members and prepare for your visit to our nation’s capital. Day 1: D; Day 2: B, D

DAY 3—ICONIC SITES OF D.C.
Today, experience some of Washington, D.C’s most iconic sites. Enjoy a guided tour of the U.S. Capitol Building and gain a deeper understanding of our nation’s democratic functions. View emblematic documents from our nation’s history, including the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights at the National Archives. This afternoon, spend time at the National Mall exploring the many museums the Smithsonian Institution has to offer. This evening, enjoy dinner with your fellow DAR travelers. B, D

DAY 4—ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY/FIRST DAY OF CONFERENCE
This morning, embark on a tour of Arlington National Cemetery, where rows of white headstones pay tribute
to the brave men and women who have served the nation. This afternoon, participate in the first day of the
Continental Congress, immersing yourself in insightful business sessions, committee meetings, and an array of
engaging social functions. B

DAYS 5-7—CONTINTENTAL CONGRESS
Enjoy the next few days as you are expertly guided to and from the Continental Congress. Between the sessions, take advantage of the opportunity to explore the captivating city of Washington, D.C. B

DAY 8—FINAL DAY OF CONFERENCE
This morning, soak up the last moments of the Continental Congress as it comes to an end. Enjoy one last afternoon to experience the city before departing. B

OPTION—MT. VERNON
This afternoon, travel to Alexandria to visit the home of our first president. Tour the mansion, explore the grounds, and experience a Revolutionary War Encampment. Price: $30 per person.

DAYS 9-10RETURN HOME
Today, we will depart Washington, D.C. and begin our journey back to Des Moines. During our drive, reminisce
with your newfound friends on the memorable moments and sessions from our time in Washington, D.C. Day 9: B, D; Day 10: B

Arrival Time
We will be departing Des Moines at 7:15 a.m. on June 21st. Please arrive to the meeting point at least 30 minutes prior to departure. The meeting point will be communicated closer to the departure date.

Departure Time
We will be arriving back in Des Moines at 6:00 p.m. on June 30th.

Vehicle Parking
Information regarding parking will be communicated closer to the departure date.

Walking Distance
Moderate walking is required to fully enjoy this tour. Some walking will be on uneven paths. You will be given ample free time to explore the National Mall and Smithsonian museums, which does require some longer walks. While walking canes are allowed, we are unable to accommodate travelers using other mobility devices, including walkers and wheelchairs.

This tour involves long driving days in order to maximize our time in Washington, DC. While the group will stop for restrooms and meals every 2-3 hours, please note that Days 1-2 and 9-10 require all-day travel.
